Upon arrival in Costa Rica the average middle aged, English speaking gentleman can expect to meet dozens if not hundreds of young women actively competing for attention. After spending days so many attractive women the idea of a long term term relationship starts to come to mind.
The truth is that settling down with a prostitute is a path fraught with conflict and disappointment. Most of the girls are just getting by on the easy money that comes from prostitution. They view a relationship with a foreigner as either a respite or chance to get a big score.
For example some of the more attractive girls exploit the “boyfriends” to pay for plastic surgeries, breast enhancement, braces and expensive beauty treatments. Castro’s a nice disco club popular with aficionados of Salsa and Cumbia, and a great place to hang out for those who just like to watch and drink.
It’s $2 taxi ride from downtown, the service is top notch, and best of all Castro's usually has a higher percentage of women to men than other venues in San Jose.
El Pueblo is just a few blocks north of downtown, and is a complex of dance clubs and bars with a plenty of action on just about any night.
Perhaps the easiest places to meet female talent is during the daytime in the parks, pedestrian boulevards, and small commercial spaces in downtown San Jose.
There are a number of dance clubs and bars in San Pedro area, which is also a short taxi ride from downtown. The most famous area is the Calle de la Amargura, which is a street full of cheap bars, cafes and pizza joints, located near the University of Costa Rica.
At the night however the single male traveler without any luck meeting "nice girls" can make a pass through the Key Largo at Closing Time.

I love this part the best! A puta is a puta nada mas! When I was living in Bangkok, this one girl was freaking out because,as she was living with this one guy from England. Not only am I OK with it being all about the money, I am stoked it is an option, and I consider it delusional to expect something else. If a woman isn't getting her financial support from the guy(s) whose bed(s) she is in, she is in the wrong bed(s). Any guy who doesn't want to pay for it in some way is kind of a predatory prick. Putting women down for needing something from the guys she sleeps with is no more realistic than believing we own them, as you clearly point out. We mongers can't have it both ways, love having sex with them and look down on them for needing money. I think you got it just right, Dave. Renting is the way to go, both for us, and for them.
